Georgia Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled (GLS)
Through Georgia Library Service (GLS) for the Blind and Print Disabled, Georgia Public Library Service provides library services for individuals who are blind or whose physical abilities require the use of books and magazines in audio format or in braille. We provide vital reading materials in an accessible format.
Who does GLS serve?
GLS serves eligible patrons who need reading materials in an accessible format. Patrons are eligible if they are blind, low vision, or physically unable to hold a book and turn the page. GLS services are also available to persons with reading disabilities such as dyslexia. All potential patrons must enroll in GLS services and have their application signed by a certifying authority. That certifying authority must be someone who can attest to the condition that is making a person eligible. This is typically a physician, a nurse, professional caregiver, therapist or educator. Unfortunately, relatives cannot certify people. A librarian can certify patrons, as well.
This application can be printed and mailed for free from anywhere in Georgia.

In addition to the Extension Services for Institutions, we have several services we offer local schools. Some of these services are available only to public schools.
- Programs and Tours: We love visiting classrooms and having fieldtrips at the library! Let us arrange a tour of the library or a special story time in your school or daycare center. Email jdomenech@pinemtnlibrary.org for more information.
- Requests: Public schools may make requests for specific titles, subjects or reading levels. Email requests to sbarnes@pinemtnlibrary.org. The materials are loaned to your school for one month and may be renewed for an additional month if we have no other requests on the materials. Request at least 4 weeks before you need the items.
- Delivery: Your materials will be delivered to your school media center as soon as possible! We will also return to pick up your materials, so you don’t need to worry about returning your items to the library.
- Library Cards: Your media center should already have a library card on file with the Extension Services Department. Materials checked out on this card are covered under the Lost Materials Policy. Materials checked out on a personal library card are the responsibility of the borrower.
- Digital Library Cards: You and your students can sign up for Digital Library Cards by visiting gapines.org/eg/opac/register. These cannot be used to checkout physical materials, and they do not accrue fines.
- Local Newspapers: We have microfilm reels of local newspapers. They don’t circulate, but we will be happy to search for a specific article and send you a copy for no charge! Unfortunately, the microfilm is not indexed, so you’ll need to provide an approximate date for searching.
- Lost Materials: Public schools are only held responsible for 5% of lost or damaged PMRLS materials. Some materials may come from other Georgia libraries outside of our four-county system (PMRLS). This policy does not apply to private schools or for materials borrowed from libraries outside of PMRLS. For more details, please contact the library.
